DONG Yuxiang (born 1990, Wujiang, Jiangsu Province, China) is an art, educational, and social worker. His current practices and research are driven by the contradiction between ethnography in the Anthropocene and the speculation of object-oriented ontology.
He received a Project Fellow at the Future Histories Studio in the Stony Brook University (2025-26), a residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (2025), an Honorable Mention of the PhMuseum Photography Grant (2023), a longlist of The Lumen Prize for Art and Technology (2023), a finalist of the Three Shadows Photography Award (2016). He has exhibited at Hermitage Museum & Gardens, Norfolk, VA (US), The New Gallery, Calgary, Alberta (Canada); OCAT Institute, Beijing (China); Verzasca Foto, Canton of Ticino (Switzerland); Jakarta International Photo Festival, Jakarta, (Indonesia); and other international venues. His documentaries and filmic works have been screened at Obskuur Ghent Film Festival (Belgium), Doc.Boston Documentary Film Festival (US), Stay Art Festival (China), and other global festivals.
He writes extensively at the nexus of art, technology, and society. His articles have been published in FIELD: A Journal of Socially-Engaged Art Criticism, Photographies, The Journal of Media Art Study and Theory, Media-N: Journal of the New Media Caucus, as well as edited volumes including Socially Engaged Public Art in East Asia: Space, Place, and Community in Action. In 2018, he was a recipient of the Joint Second Prize in the International Awards for Art Criticism. He has presented his research at Tate Liverpool, College Art Association Annual Conference, and other international institutions and conferences.
He is currently teaching at the Department of Art and Art History in the University of Miami. Prior to Miami, he has taught at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Cincinnati, Art Academy of Cincinnati, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Rochester Institute of Technology.
He holds a BFA in Photography from Beijing Film Academy, an MFA in Imaging Arts from Rochester Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Media, Art, and Text from Virginia Commonwealth University. His dissertation received the highly ranked art and technology dissertation abstract (2022) by the Leonardo journal abstracts service.
